A dead battery often announces itself with dim lights, rapid clicking, or an engine that will not crank. If the battery is merely discharged, you can usually get moving again with jumper cables and a second vehicle or with a portable jump starter.
This guide explains how to jump start a car safely, including the correct cable order, what to check before connecting anything, and what to do after the engine starts. Always read your vehicle owner's manual first. Some vehicles use designated jump points or have model-specific procedures.

With both vehicles off, connect the clamps in this order:
Start the donor vehicle, wait a few minutes, and then try the disabled vehicle. After it starts, remove the cables in reverse order. This is the common procedure described by AAA, but your owner's manual takes priority.

The vehicles must use compatible electrical systems. Most passenger cars use 12-volt batteries, but do not assume. Never use a 24-volt truck system to jump a 12-volt car.

Park the donor vehicle close enough for the cables to reach without stretching, but do not let the vehicles touch. Put both transmissions in Park. For a manual transmission, use Neutral. Set both parking brakes.

Do not let the free clamps touch each other or any metal surface.
Attach the other red clamp to the positive (+) terminal of the donor battery. You now have a positive-to-positive connection.
Attach one black clamp to the negative (-) terminal of the donor battery. Check that the red and black clamps are not touching and that the cables remain away from moving parts.
Attach the remaining black clamp to the manufacturer-approved ground point on the disabled vehicle. If the manual does not show one, the common method uses a solid, clean, unpainted metal part of the engine or chassis away from the battery and fuel system.
Do not attach this final clamp to the negative terminal of the dead battery unless the vehicle manufacturer specifically directs you to do so. Keeping the last connection away from the battery reduces the chance of a spark near battery gas.
Check all four connections, then start the donor vehicle. Let it idle for a few minutes. Avoid aggressive revving.
If either cable becomes hot, smokes, or moves toward a belt or fan, shut the vehicle off and stop immediately.
Try to start the disabled vehicle. Do not crank continuously. If it does not start after a brief attempt, stop, wait a few more minutes, and try again according to the owner's manual.
If it still will not start after two or three reasonable attempts, stop. The problem may be a failed battery, poor connection, starter issue, alternator fault, or another electrical problem.
Once the disabled vehicle is running steadily, keep the clamps separated as you remove them:
